The Obvious Expert

The father-son team of Eldridge and Eldridge has created a must-read book for anyone in private practice, whether licensed or unlicensed: How to Position Yourself As the Obvious Expert: Turbocharge Your Consulting or Coaching Business Now! It fills in an important gap in most people’s education: how to get the word out about who you are and what you do, in a way that’s ethical, effective, and even fun!

The Eldridges have many accomplishments under their belts. For example, the elder Eldridge, Elsom Eldridge Jr., has been running the annual convention of the National Guild of Hypnotists, with its 300+ seminars and workshops, for years. But their book presents the task of building up your local visibility, credibility, and reputation in a simple, straightforward way. Highly recommended.

Galileo’s Lawyer

Richard Jaffe’s book, Galileo’s Lawyer: Courtroom Battles in Alternative Health, Complementary Medicine and Experimental Treatments is a delightful surprise. I couldn’t put it down! He tells of his legal battles defending unconventional practitioners, and he tells them very well.

In addition to being a great book that anyone could read with pleasure, it shows insight into how things go wrong, with the state and federal bureaucracies that are supposed to “protect the public” often working for their cronies in the mainstream medical industry, and sometimes descending into outright criminality, such as when New Jersey decided to extort money from chiropractors for imaginary violations. Jaffe had to file federal anti-racketeering charges against the State of New Jersey before they backed off.

Jaffe’s Web site is a useful reference, though terse, and nowhere near as detailed, informative, and entertaining as his book.

Legal Guidelines for Unlicensed Practitioners

Legal Guidelines For Unlicensed Practitioners, by Dr. Lawrence Wilson, is a slim volume that covers a lot of ground, including legal concepts, record-keeping, the difference between licensing and certification, and much more. It presents its material simply, which in itself is a real accomplishment!
